Did Mickey Rourke lose the Oscar for Bush comment?

January 16, 2009 by Celebolitics - Celebrity Politics

Mickey Rourke won the Golden Globe award for Best Actor for his performance in The Wrestler. A sympathetic Rourke was quoted in a British magazine saying…

“President Bush was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I don”t know how anyone could have handled this situation… I dont give a f**k who’s in office, Bush or whoever, there is no simple solution to this problem… I’m not one of those who blames Bush for everything. This s**t between Christians and Muslims goes back to the Crusades, doesn’t it.”

Anyone want to bet Rourke’s Hollywood awards will end at the Golden Globes?

This makes Sean Penn the easy front runner for the Oscar for his portrayal of a Gay Rights activist and city politician. A much more Hollywood friendly bet.

Do you think that those hired to tally Oscar ballots are dishonest?

According to http://www.NPR.org, “Every year, the week of the Oscars, Brad Oltmanns and Rick Rosas, partners at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and about 12 counters go to an undisclosed location in Southern California and hand count all 6,000 ballots. It takes the team about three days to determine the Academy Award winners.”

What makes Sean Penn the “frontrunner?” Does your definition of a “Hollywood friendly bet” portray a closed mind?

    Nicole,
No, I don’t think the people at Pricewaterhouse are dishonest. I think the “academy” may cast their votes based on more than an on screen performance.

The prediction of a Rourke loss and a Penn win was made on Jan. 16. If the actual vote would have been different, I would have admitted I was wrong, but I knew it was a safe bet.

As for Penn, he can have his opinion, but I disagree with that opinion. Is this being closed minded?

When I think of closed minded, Penn’s acceptance speech would qualify. He told Prop 8 supporters to “anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes…”

Why can’t someone disagree with him without “anticipating great shame” for their belief?

Does closed mindedness work only one way?

Your basic conclusion that Mr. Rourke didn’t receive the Academy Award for Best Actor because of his sympathetic comments toward President Bush seems a bit narrow. I believe there must have been more reasons for Penn winning this award, other than his famous (or infamous) liberalism, and Rourke not.

It’s not close minded to disagree with someone’s opinion. I believe that referring to Penn as “closeminded” is like saying, “he can have an opinion; as long as he doesn’t voice it.” I believe he’s right.

You’re saying that people can’t voice an opinion against an opinion without being closeminded.
